The global mobility revolution is transforming transportation and the energy ecosystem. Trends like the rise of EVs, urban micro-mobility and an increasing emphasis on eco-friendly transportation have reshaped consumer preferences and their behavioural patterns. Instead of using ICE vehicles as their main mode of transportation, people in urban and crowded environments are prioritizing methods like e-scooters, public transportation and shared mobility solutions.

This poses a significant challenge for fuel retailers. A decline in the use of ICE vehicles will result in reduced fuel purchasing. This decreases retailers’ immediate revenue. However, there is more cause for concern, since it also raises questions about retailers’ long-term future. With consumers transitioning to EVs and micro-mobility, resulting in fuel consumption levels declining, fuel retailers need to find alternatives and a reliable path for future business growth.

Less ICE, But Not an Icy Future

The solution may lie where it is least expected - in the modern workplace. Companies have traditionally been offering transportation-related benefits to their employees in the form of company-owned vehicles, fuel cards, or transportation expenses. However, these options do not cover micro-mobility. As a result, employees often reject these legacy ”perks”, when offered. This leaves employees empty-handed and frustrated, which can easily lead to employee churn.

But this workplace challenge can fuel fuel retailers’ (yes we just did that) next golden egg. Workplaces need a technological solution that answers employees’ innovative mobility demands. That solution is “mobility cards”, which combine micro-mobility and public transport options with the traditional offering of the forecourt (c-store, fuel etc.) in a simple and manageable manner.

Retailers that offer “mobility cards” to workplaces will address a significant gap in the marketplace. They can help companies provide employees with a choice of their favorite mode of transport, while reducing operational complexity and legal hurdles that are impeding adoption today. This new offering will enable retailers to expand their line of business to a broad, demanding and untapped market that is thirsty for a solution. All it takes is a simple paradigm shift and the right operational platform.
